The title of this book screams "Christmas present". And so it is: ideal for anyone with a little time on their hands and a love of natural scents and textures. What does surprise, given both the theme and the traditional, "Lady"-ish presentation, is the way so many projects--from the rosemary pomanders to the transparent herb soaps to the chilli wall hangings--would fit so elegantly and appropriately into the starkest of contemporary interiors. From The Cross to Crabtree and Evelyn, the fashion for perfumed linen and interiors is generating all kinds of exciting and novel products, from bakery-scented kitchen sprays to designer fabric softeners. Decorating with Herbs is a timely reminder that at the root of this fashion sit simple, effective homemaking ideas that have been with us at least since Egyptian times. The photography, by Michelle Garratt, is positively edible, though poorly served by the layout. Whoever decided to put a large white text box slap bang in the middle of every double-page photograph should be shot.
