About the Author

Roshan Shishoo PhD, Professor in Fibre Technology, formerly Director of Research and Managing Director of TEFO and IFP Research institutes in Sweden, now runs his own consultancy business in the area of company strategies in research and business growth. He has published nearly 200 papers in the fields of textile & clothing technology, technical textiles and textile composites. He has been an invited speaker at more than 150 international conferences worldwide. Professor Shishoo was awarded the honorary fellowship of The Textile Institute in 1999 which is the highest honour the TI gives to an individual.

The technical developments in the sports clothing industry have
resulted in the use of engineered textiles for highly specialised
performances in different sports. With high-functional and smart materials
providing such a strong focus in the textile industry generally, companies
are increasingly looking for `value added' textiles and functional design
in sportswear as well as intelligent textiles which monitor performance
with in-built sensors. Combining clothing functions with wear comfort is a
growing market trend, and for all active sportsmen this constitutes one of
