A mythology has built up around the C programming language that it is an extremely difficult language, accessible only to computer systems engineers. Its object-oriented successor, C++, is often regarded with even greater awe. This book sets about demystifying the language by presenting C++ and the more practical aspects of object-oriented programming as a useful problem-solving tool. Firstly, the use of the language in solving a wide variety of interesting real-world problems is demonstrated. The emphasis is mainly on scientific and engineering applications, although examples from many other areas are also included. Secondly, applications of object-oriented programming in scientific computing are demonstrated (C++ is considered by many professional programmers to be the best vehicle for this).
