Synopsis

This is one of a series of books for hands-on usage by project management practitioners and assumes the reader has a good knowledge of the prinicples of project management. Each book in the series defines an aspect of project management in a practical way and brings together knowledge gained by Duhig Berry consultants in the undertaking of their work. The series is based on PRINCE structured project management method owned by the UK government's CCTA. The PRINCE methodology is directed and controlled by a Design Authority Board and supported by an active PRINCE user group. The methods are used in government and private sectors and in IT and non-IT applications. "Practical Organisation Structures" provides guidance in one of the most important areas of project management, that of establishing a definitive and effective set of project management roles and responsibilities. In many projects this can be achieved with little or no tailoring of PRINCE's well proven set of such roles and responsibilities. In other projects things may be not quite so straightforward and of course it is in just such cases where getting it right is even more important. The guide looks at several typical project scenarios where a more drastic tailoring of PRINCE may be both required and appropriate. Faced with such situations it can be difficult to know how far to depart from an easily recognisable PRINCE set-up and hard to determine what the risk of such departure might be. The guide looks at how to balance the preservation of the integrity of the underlying method against the achievement of a practical management structure. Such a structure needs to be resilient to the strains and pressures to which it will be exposed during the life of the project. A key factor in this is the ease with which both those involved in the project and others in the organisation can relate to the structure and the guide will help the user to achieve such a structure.
