Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Village Press Edition. Edwardian London, originally published in 1903 under the title "Living London", was edited by George R. Sims. It first appeared in magazine form, being issued monthly and written by numerous authors who each took a detailed look at a particular aspect of life in London. It is arguably the most comprehensive social study ever conducted of a specific era and the text is accompanied by over 1100 illustrations most of which were specially commissioned photographs taken at a time when the camera definitely did not lie. The subjects covered are numerous and various and do not seem to follow any set pattern, for instance a chapter on 'My Lady's Afternoon in London' is followed immediately by 'Sweated London'. There are chapters on the Docks, Board Schools, The Old Bailey, the Fire Brigade, the Thames Police, London's Club Land and one entitled Evicted London. In the chapter on Bar and Saloon London the reader discovers that London's pubs were licensed to open twenty and a half hours out of every twenty four for six days a week, while on Sunday the hours were one o'clock until three in the afternoon and six o'clock to eleven at night. Every aspects of Life in London, appears to have been covered, from the Royal Family to the working man, the Arts, business and recreation and one picture of the Victoria Embankment at night is of particular significance as it mirrors a scene very much in evidence today. The Village Press is pleased to re-publish this fine work in a four volume paper back set. Illustrated throughout. Tiny crease to front cover. Couple of tiny marks to inside cover.
