Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. (Revolution and Romanticism, 1789-1834) Series. A series of facsimile reprints. Dust jacket unclipped. Green cloth, gilt titling backed in maroon on spine. No inscription.61 pages clean and tight. In the late 1790s the Reverend James Plumptre made three walking tours in the Lake District, taking with him as reading matter Uvedale Price's Essays on the picturesque (1794), and (we may infer) using as his guides Thomas West and the Reverend William Gilpin. The result was The lakers. a satire on the vogue for tourism and the picturesque that may be compared to the later Tour of Dr Syntax by Combe and Rowlandson. Plumptre's very funny play was never performed: perhaps it should be. It is engagingly readable, appearing in the same year as Lyrical ballads and showing (as Jane Austen does in Sense and sensibility) the humourous side of a tradition that had opened the eyes of Wordsworth and his generation to the appreciation of Landscape. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 118396
