Combining an informal approach to language and strong visual imagery, this book which is part of a series investigates the theme of maps. It encourages students to carry out experiments following the step-by-step instructions and make things so that they will understand how geographical processes work. The first illustration shows a bird's-eye view of a continent and explains the difference between seeing something from the ground, from an oblique view or above. It then goes on to describe the use of scale and a grid with an example of drawing to scale. Signs and symbols are important aspects of map-making as shown by the features on a contour map. To illustrate the contours on a landscape a model of a mountainous region is constructed with methods given for marking the contours. As well as mapping the landscape, geographers map underground, the sky and the deep sea floor. Suggestions are given for an undersea map, with instructions given for the creation of a three-dimensional map. The book explains route maps, the skills of surveying and measuring, plotting maps, and finding one's way by using a map.
The final chapter covers the development of mapping techniques using computers and satellite technology. Through the experience of being a mapping "scientist", it is hoped stundets will learn the concepts of observation, data collection, organization and deduction. The series was the 1994 winner of the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
