What happens inside a camera? How do lenses make objects look larger or smaller? How can you take photographs without using a camera? This book on photography explores: the most simple devices such as pinhole cameras and those that take film, focal length, zoom lenses, films and format, the aperture and gives advice on building your own camera and tripod. Suggestions are given for: lighting a set to create different effects; making a developing tank; processing a film and making prints and contact strips using an enlarger. Finally, photograms, pictures without a camera are explained and the 19th century invention the zoetrope. This book, which is part of a series, adopts a less formalized approach to language, combined with strong visual imagery and attempts to promote learning through being a "scientist". In this way children meet the concepts of observation, data collection, organization and deduction and make it work. The series was the 1994 winner of the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award.
