Synopsis
Investigating the theme of time, this book which is part of a series, combines an informal approach to language and strong visual imagery to provides experiments to illustrate: how the sun can be used to tell the time and why there are 365 days in a year and 24 hours in a day; how your position around the globe, or longitude determines the time of day; how travelling north or south to a different latitude does not affect time but it does change the number of daylight hours and the height of the sun in the sky. Through the making of sundials, universal sundials, a device which which one can line up the stars to tell the time; candle clocks, water clocks, pendulum clocks, electronic clocks, timetables and time casules, this book attempts to promote learning through the child being a "scientist". In this way children meet the concepts of observation, data collection, organization and deduction and make it work. The series was the 1994 winner of the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award.
