Synopsis

One of a series which won the 1995 American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award, this book on space offers a hands-on approach to learning. It examines key scientific principles, from how to tell that planets orbit the sun to what would happen if you fell into a black hole. It begins wirh a spread illustrating all the necessary equipment to become an amateur astronomer. Instructions are given: for the making of a model which shows how the earth's spin gives us day and night; for the construction of a sundial, to tell the time, which charts the shadows throughout the day; a model which helps to explain why the seasons happen at different times north and south of the equator; a solar heater which uses a curved reflector to concentrate sunlight and heat the air inside a ball and a model which explains why the moon appears to change as it moves in its orbit. This book aims to encourage readers to become "scientists" by making the experiments to prove scientific theories. The making of a model of the Saturn 5 rocket is described; an explanation of an eclipse is given as is the construction of a simple telescope using two magnifying lenses.

The planets furthest from the sun travel more slowly in their orbits than those that are nearby - a model is illustrated to show how an orbit speeds up as it gets smaller. Planets' movement around the sun and the inside of a planet is made easier to understand with the use of suggested models. The exploration of space is further explained through models which represent space probes, the vegetation on a space colony and the different stages in the life of a star. To help learn the names of the stars and constellations the instructions are given for a home-made planetarium and finally step-by-step instructions are given for a model which explains the way a massive star curves the space around it, and how expansion makes galaxies move apart.
