Synopsis

This series offers a new, hands-on approach to learning, exploring science through experiments, projects and activities. Scientists describe a machine as anything which puts energy to work to perform a useful job, This book examines and explains some of the basic principles of physics that are the foundation of all machines - levers, pulleys, bearings, friction gears and screws - as well as simple engines and their applications. The projects and activities such as the construction of a rubber-band powered roadster, steam putt-putt boats and a sand clock help children to understand the scientific principles involved. David Glover trained as a research physicist before becoming involved in science education. He is the author of a wide variety of science books (including work on the recent Ginn Primary Science Scheme) and is a tutor for the Open University's science foundation course.
