Everyone talks about the Ulster Protestants, some even talk to them, but few listen. Their case is too strident, not politically correct; yet if there is to be an end to the Troubles, it must be heard and heeded. Without understanding there can be no prospect of an Ireland united on any accommodation. And this is fine with the Ulster Protestants: they do not want to be understood as much as left alone. Their perceptions have been built on fear and suspicion, but their distaste for the Republic is often justified; their assumption that Irish nationalism and Irish Catholicism are one can convince. If harsh, their fundamental case can be compelling. The Protestants of Ulster will not go away, not after three centuries. They will not play an assigned part. They are in the grip of a dream as compelling as that of the republicans. And yet they are not beyond reason or accommodation. And without such an accommodation the past will again be prologue and the gun will return to Irish politics. Author sets out his case that everyone talks about the Ulster Protestants, but few listen. They are not beyond reason or accommodation, yet if there is to be an end to the Troubles, their voice must be heard and heeded.
