Synopsis

When Maxie Morgan walks into Dublin private detective John Blaine's office on a sweltering July day, he brings with him unwelcome vibes from our hero's past. Morgan had been his best friend, but was also a conniving git who stole, lied and sold Blaine down the Swanee every chance he got. Now he has a new problem that he wants Blaine to untangle: a rich man's son has got himself into a compromising situation which needs a quick and possibly even drastic solution. Blaine is soon up to his eyes in chicanery, double and treble cross. And a pair of very dead, gay star-crossed lovers. He has a threesome of underworld heavies on his trail. Smoking too much, drinking too much and sweating too much. Blaine is pummelled, poked and almost crucified by his various aggressors. But, true to his vocation as one of the last honest men. he stumbles towards his own particular apotheosis. Fast-paced, tough and funny. Death the Pale Rider marks Blaine's second outing on the mean streets of Dublin. Topical in its plot, stiletto-sharp with its one-liners, and employing a technicoloured cast of characters, this is one to devour at a sitting. PRAISE FOR DEATH BY DESIGN "If you like Raymond Chandler, you'll lore this yarn".
