This book has two broad sets of objectives. The first relates to transport in the wider context of New Right governments and a policy agenda for state activity which clearly reflects a shifting relationship between the public and private sectors. The book's focus on deregulation and transport permits a multifaceted and international illustration of the implementation of policies often associated with the New Right, in one particular service sector. The book therefore offers evidence of how and why deregulation of transport has occurred in different parts of the world, and presents a detailed series of studies of the impact of deregulation in different types of locality in Britain. The second of the book's objectives is to focus on transport "per se" and to provide evidence of the contexts, policies and practical outcomes of deregulatory measures. A series of international chapters presents a broad sweep of these issues. They are not restricted to analyses of bus transport services, offering rather a wider spread of evidence on deregulation in the transport sector.

The section dealing with the British experience does focus in on bus transport, and offers an explicit evaluation of the economic, social and political impacts of bus deregulation in different locality types. In combination, these chapters present an informative fund of evidence on which to base broader conclusions at the end of the book.
