Synopsis
Inevitably, every aircraft reaches the end of its effective operational life and is retired from active service, awaiting a range of fates: cannibalisation for spare parts, storage for later use, loving restoration as a museum piece or, most often, the smelter's torch. The aircraft in this book have suffered every conceivable fate, and include the famous Vulcan BZXM607 that took part in the "Black Buck" bombing mission to port Stanley in 1982, obsolete English Electric lightnings suffering at the guns of attack aircraft as target decoys, the Pembroke C1 abandoned after being dumped into a lake during a TV film and the Sikorsky UH-19 Chickasaw helicopters being converted into mock Soviet "Hind" gunships for use at the White Sands missile range in New Mexico.
