Synopsis
This is an analysis of the relationship between tourism and economic development, placed in the conceptual framework of the various political, social, economic and environmental contexts found in western Europe. Ten European countries are covered, both within the common framework in order to provide comparative perspectives, and also at the level of individual problems of a specific area. Taking a broad regional division of Mediterranean, Alpine, North-West and Northern Europe, the contrasts between "receiving" and "sending" countries are examined. The concluding chapter draws the threads of the discussion together, evaluating current trends and considering the policy issues and options available.
