Synopsis

Welsh Springer Spaniel The Welsh Springer Spaniel is described as a very ancient and thstinct breed of pure origin (Kennel Club Breed Standard). Certainly, spaniels in shape or form have been around for many centuries, some would say as far back as the Stone Age, and there are records of red and spaniels in Wales as early as the sixth century. In this:book, Anne Walton traces back the history of this beautiful, red and white spaniel, and then brings us right up-to-date with the Welsh Springer Spaniel today, as a pet, in the showring and as a working gundog. She also gives us the benefit of her many years' experience in such important areas as selection, breeding, grooming, showing and judging. As is fit ting for this breed, there is a chapter on the working spaniel, with contributions from Gordon Pattinson, Eileen Falconer and Julie Revill, and there is also a detailed chapter about health care, with contributions from subject specialists Mike Dale, Geoff Skerritt and Mike Stockman. In her chapters on grooming, breeding and judging, Anne gives us step-by-step descriptions, beautifully illustrated with photographs by Robert Smith, of how she carries out the practicalities. Anne Walton's interest in dogs goes back many years, and she acquired her first Welsh Springer Spaniel in 1965. She has held various positions in the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club, and was elected President in 1996. She is also a member of The Kennel Club. An international judge of Welsh and English Springer Spaniels, she has judged the breed in Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States of America. She has made up eight Show Champions in this country and exported puppies to Europe, America and Australia, where they have been shown with great success. This book, fully illustrated with photographs and line draw ings, will be of value not only to lovers of Welsh Springer Spaniels but to anyone with an interest in working spaniels.
