Synopsis

This text, based on a collection of contemporary newspaper cuttings, provides an insight into the sinking of the Titanic and its aftermath. The reports, primarily from the "Daily Sketch" and "The Times", have an immediacy, pathos, and wealth of human interest even more than 80 years after the tragedy. The coverage is from the sinking on the night of 14 April 1912 through to the end of the British inquiry, four months later. It includes 400 Titanic-related photographs and the only surviving photograph of the Tussaud model of the ship's commander - Captain E.J. Smith. This tragedy held the front page of a tabloid for 15 consecutive issues and features tales of romance, heroism, devotion to duty, lucky escapes, hints of cowardice, suggestions of murder, and supreme sacrifice - providing an insight into a past era when Britain had an Empire, suffragettes, and a firm belief in itself.
