Synopsis

Much has been written about man's exploration of outer space. But this book, by a diver who has been involved in both military and commercial sub-sea operations for more than 25 years, is the first to record the highly sophisticated operations now taking place in "inner space" - beneath the oceans that cover some 70% of the Earth's surface. The book traces the development of underwater equipment, which has been transformed from the heavy standard diving dress of the mid 1960s to the present deep saturation diving gear, remote operated vehicles and seabed vehicles. It examines the training, rescue facilities and medicine that play such a vital role in this extremely dangerous environment and considers the different types of work undertaken by divers, such as in the offshore oil and gas industry, but also inland water diving.
