For decades nothing had changed on the railways in the depths of the south west and the amazing goings-on far-flung country branch lines in the late 1940s and early '50s

Jack Warland started work with the Southern Railway as a messenger boy and retired in 1986 as a Training Manager with the British Railways Board. But it was his time as a relief signalman in the south of England that provides the basis for this collection of memories and anecdotes. Travelling between signal boxes on holiday and rest-day relief, he saw more of the operating side of the old mechanically signalled steam railways than a signalman stationed in just one box. His recollections are both funny and informative, helping to paint a picture of a way of life now rare.
