The Anglo-Scottish border was once crossed by seven different railway lines, of which only two survive. Today, electric trains cross from one country to the other at Gretna on the West Coast Main Line, and are soon to do so at Lamberton, north of Berwick on the East Coast. But the other five crossings are almost as forgotten as the Roman roads that once criss-crossed the district, and this will be the first book to chronicle and describe the story of all seven routes. Of particular interest is the viaduct across the Solway Firth, in its day the longest structure of its kind in the world.
A.J. Mullay has written one book for David & Charles on the streamlined expresses of the 1930s. He has also written London's Scottish Railways for Tempus Publishing as well as numerous articles on subjects as diverse as local history and the 1904 Bruce Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. He lives in Edinburgh
