Synopsis

This series examines what life was like for people in Britain during World War II. Each title takes a different aspect of civilian life and looks at its dangers, difficulties and pleasures. Much of the story is told by eye-witness accounts. This book describes how many goods, in short supply, were rationed during World War II. It explains why shortages occurred and how governments introduced rationing so that hardship was shared equally among everyone. The author also explains how people tried to overcome the shortages, by recycling, by the "making do and mend" campaigns and by "digging for victory". Eye-witness accounts convey vividly what it meant to children and ordinary people to be living through the war years.
