About the Author

Joseph Sebarenzi is the former speaker of the Rwandan parliament, a position he held from 1997 to 2000. In this role, he spoke at the United Nations, the European Union Assembly, the Inter-parliamentary Union in Egypt, and the UN Human Rights Commission in South Africa.

From the Back Cover

In 1994 Rwanda was abandoned by the international community to suffer a genocide that rivalled the efficiency of the Nazi holocaust. 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered over the course of 90 days, and among the dead were Joseph Sebarenzi’s parents, seven brothers and sisters, and countless other family members.

Caught up in one of the twentieth century’s most horrific conflicts, Sebarenzi poignantly recounts his narrow escape, as well as the struggle he faced on his return a year later to help rebuild his shattered homeland. He eventually rose to become the elected speaker for parliament, where he worked to reinstate democracy and combat corruption in the face of strong opposition in this deeply scarred country, only to be forced to flee for his life once again.

Both a harrowing account of human suffering and an inspiring testament to human courage, God Sleeps in Rwanda is a lucid, pensive, and beautifully written memoir of one man’s daring journey back, and of his attempts to make a difference.
