In the last few decades lithography has become the major book production process, but its versatility and potential for short-run, "do it yourself" publishing were first exploited early in the 19th century. The arrival of desk top publishing has stimulated an interest in this once neglected, but now very relevant, area of printing history, and Twyman's meticulous research presents the reader with a minute account of the subject. He describes the design and production of a wide range of publications, from a broad variety of sources, for whom lithography promised a flexibility unobtainable from letterpress. However, some of his most interesting accounts and demonstrations are of hopes disappointed and a return to letterpress. This text is a study of the potential of lithography for "do it yourself" publication in the 19th century by the military (manuals), antiquarians (catalogues), by those needing special types (Champollion on hieroglyphs, Pitman on shorthand) and by publishers mixing text with illustration and tables. There were a great variety of users whose output is later mirrored in the "camera ready" books of the 1960s and 1970s. A full catalogue is included. A limited edition leather-bound version of the book is also available, priced #150.00.

Cloth, gilt cover device, 4to, 26 cm, 374 pp, ills. From the introduction: "This book is about books produced by lithography in Europe in the age of the hand press. The period it covers corresponds roughly with the first half of the nineteenth century, but since the hand press continued to be used for lithography long after this, even on a commercial basis, I have allowed myself some chronological licence. To my knowledge very little of any consequence has been published about such books by those who wrote on lithographic subjects at the time, and nothing at all since then. This book's main aim, therefore, is to introduce a little-known area of book design and production; but I hope that it will also contribute to our understanding of the overall picture of printing and publishing history." Contents include: Introduction; Lithographic incunables; Military manuals: the presses at Chatham and Metz ; The lithographic publications of Sir Thomas Phillipps; Books on accounting and other 'difficult composition'; Music method books; Non-latin scripts; Lithography and phonography: the books of Isaac Pitman; Books with pictures; Reprints of books and facsimiles of old documents; Facsimiles of autographs; Photolithographed facsimiles and reprints; Postscript.
