From the Author

argues against Pauline authorship of 2 Thessalonians.
In this book, which is a substantial revision of a Ph.D. dissertation (Northwestern University / Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, 1984) directed by Robert Jewett, I examine the issue of Pauline authorship of 2 Thessalonians. In chapter 2 I develop the method of rhetorical criticism of NT letters, based on Graeco-Roman rhetoric. This method is applied to 2 Thessalonians in chapter 3. In chapter 4 I argue that the theology and rhetoric of 2 Thessalonians is best understood as a polemical reaction to the theology underlying Colossians and Ephesians. In the concluding chapter I locate 2 Thessalonians, Colossians, Ephesians, and the Pastoral Epistles in the dynamics in early Pauline churches following the death of the Apostle. I argue that the rhetoric of 2 Thessalonians is best understood as coming from a Paulinist who was reacting to Colossians / Ephesians, and therefore most likely not the Apostle Paul himself.
