This book is devoted to explaining the law affecting the immunity from judicial action of foreign governments, their embassies, staff and their property. The law in this area has been codified by the State Immunity Act 1978 under which the old common law rules were largely abolished. The Act lays down specific rules for the granting or withholding of immunity and "State and Diplomatic Immunity" provides a detailed analysis of those rules. It also includes coverage of the two most important treaties in the area - the European Convention and the Brussels Convention. The author discusses all relevant UK cases and makes frequent reference to US and other jurisdictions. For this third edition, the second part of the book has been considerably expanded and is devoted to diplomatic and consular immunity. Many new cases have been added and the contents thoroughly updated, including a completely new chapter on the International Tin Council Litigation and discussion of the effects of the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987.
