Satellite navigational systems will become increasingly widely-used over the next few years. Indeed their accuracy and the implications this has for safety and security will probably make their installation essential, even compulsory. A number of systems will become available, the first being the US GPS system, developed by the US Air Force. This new book provides a working appreciation of the concept of Global Positioning Systems, with the emphasis on the implications for the maritime industry. It is not a training or systems manual, but a guide to the practical applications of such systems and their operation. More technical detail is, however, available in the final sections of the book. GPS systems are compared with existing navigational systems and the four major GPS systems are discussed and compared. The authors go on to describe receivers, and the practical aspects of the operation of GPS systems, then provide a thorough examination of their impact on and advantages for the professional mariner.
