Special emphasis is given to the scalable I/O facilities of Java 1.4 as well as complete treatments of multi-homing and UDP both unicast and multicast.

I wrote this book because of my deep dissatisfaction with the existing Java texts and with Sun's javadoc, as evidenced on the Java Developer Connection forums on which I am pretty well-known. Most of these books try to cover all known aspects of Java networking and IPC in 1280 pages with screen shots, and do it very badly. Some of the smaller books are more specialized but I'm afraid that every one of them I have examined is riddled with errors and irrelevancies, including some very well-known titles indeed. In this book I have aimed at being as correct and authoritative as W.R. Stevens in his TCP/IP Illustrated and Unix Network Programming books, which are constantly by my side.
This book is an in-depth learning and teaching resource for the understanding and programming of TCP/IP networking in Java. I was an early reviewer of this book and I admire its economical and thorough but eminently readable style, lucidly describing complex issues without ever outstaying its welcome. This book combines academic rigour with a practical approach deeply informed by real-world experience and I have no hesitation in recommending it to developers of all experience levels. Experienced engineers building network-centric infrastructure or services should not be without this book. In fact, any Java developer building distributed applications such as J2EE, Jini, and Web Services should read this book ― at least to understand the fundamental implications of networking on application design and implementation.
