Synopsis
A radical new version of Ibsen's When We Dead Awaken, by Mike Poulton, the award-winning adapter for the stage of classics such as Schiller's Don Carlos and Luise Miller for the Donmar.
Whilst holidaying with his young wife, Rubek encounters his muse: a woman that he loved and left a lifetime ago. What follows is a heartfelt examination of how Rubek has used these two. Over a series of heated encounters, the entire scroll of Rubek's life is unrolled in Ibsen's final - and most autobiographical - exploration of what it means to love and to be loved.
This is the last play Ibsen wrote before his death in 1906, and one of his most haunting and breathtaking pieces. A celebration of life and love, When We Dead Awaken is one of Ibsen's most extraordinary and deeply personal works. Set within a mythical Nordic landscape, Mike Poulton's version, Judgement Day, offers an explicit and merciless self-portrait of Ibsen as an aging artist: restless with his art, his homeland, and his married life.

About the Author
Mike Poulton's other critically acclaimed adaptations include Ibsen's Rosmersholm (Almeida Theatre), Schiller's Don Carlos (Sheffield Crucible and West End), Luise Miller (Donmar Warehouse) and Wallenstein (Chichester Festival Theatre), as well as The Canterbury Tales and Morte d'Arthur for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
