Synopsis

A new play for our time. A seemingly normal detention in a seemingly normal comprehensive school. The valiant teacher battles on with biology revision. She believes that only education will set her pupils free. Outside the classroom, the world is in the middle of a long and bloody war. Despite all her best efforts, all too soon the tide of conflict is lapping at the school gates and one by one pupils and teacher are pulled under, as their hopes and dreams float away from them. But as the teacher has taught them in her biology lesson, like the cockroach, the fittest will survive...

About the Author

Sam Holcroft is English but was educated at Edinburgh University, where she joined the Traverse Theatre s Young Writers Group (2003-5) and was nominated by them for the Royal Court/BBC scheme The Fifty . A short play, Vogue, was seen at the Royal Court Theatre in their Angry Now season in 2006 and Ned & Sharon at the 2007 High Tide Festival. Her London Street Sauna will be staged by the Traverse in 2009. She now lives in London.
