About the Author

Peter Alcock is Professor of Social Policy and Administration at the University of Birmingham and Director of the ESRC Third Sector Research Centre. He has been teaching and researching in social policy for over 30 years and is author or editor of a number of leading books in the field including Social Policy in Britain, Third Edition (Palgrave, 2008), Understanding Poverty, Third Edition (Palgrave, 2006), International Social Policy, Second Edition (Palgrave, 2009), and The Student′s Companion to Social Policy, Third Edition (Blackwell, 2008), and has also written widely on social policy, the voluntary sector, social security, poverty and social exclusion, and anti-poverty policy.

Martin Powell is Professor of health and social policy at the University of Birmingham. His areas of interest include health policy, especially New Labour; choice and consumerism; decentralization and partnership; history of health care before the NHS and social policy, especially historical and geographical dimensions, citizenship, equity, theories of welfare state development. He has published widely in various journals such as Policy and Politics, Critical Social Policy and Journal of Social Policy. He is a former editor of Social Policy and Administration.
