Synopsis

Tobias Smollett was a prominent Scottish author and poet in the 18th century. Smollett's picaresque novels were a great influence on Charles Dickens and other great authors who followed. Smollett is best remembered today for writing The Adventures of Roderick Random and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle. The Adventures of Roderick Random, published in 1748, is a novel that is partially based off Smollett's experiences as a naval-surgeon's mate in the British Navy. The book is set in the 1730s and 1740's and tells the life story of the title character who was born to a wealthy man and a lower-class woman and was therefore ignored by his father's family.

From the Back Cover

A tale of adventure and romance, it is written with great humour and panache. The memorable scenes on board ship, which provide an invaluable picture of the British sailor of the day, are drawn from Smollett's personal experience as a surgeon's mate in the navy.
