This wide-ranging book discusses the history, doctrine and practices of Catholicism. Beginning with the extraordinary life of Christ, the key events in the Christian story are retold and introduced within their historical context. The following centuries witnessed the establishment of Christianity as an official religion, the introduction of the papacy, and many important philosophical debates, wherein many of the central tenets of Catholic doctrine were first determined and confirmed. During the Middle Ages the Church underwent periods of consolidation and turbulent times of dissension and reform, whilst growing into a seat of immense political power. Further important developments such as the Crusades, the foundation of monastic orders, the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment are discussed, as well as Christianity's expansion around the globe and the flourishing of missionary movements, bringing us up to the Catholic Church of the 20th and 21st centuries. The second section of the book discusses the doctrine and essential principles of Catholic belief, such as the Holy Trinity, the Eucharist, the role of Mary, Judgement Day, and heaven, hell, and purgatory. The third and final section of the book looks at the contemporary practice of Catholicism as a religion, through services such as mass, baptism, and holy matrimony, while also discussing important days and festivals in the Catholic year. All together, these three strands of history, doctrine and practice give a comprehensive understanding of the Catholic worldview and why this religion has been such a potent force in human civilization. Lavishly illustrated with more than 500 full-colour paintings, statues, maps and photographs, and concluding with a helpful glossary, this book offers fresh insight into many aspects of a religion which remains a potent force in million's of peopleÆs lives around the world.
