Synopsis
Knockemstiff is a pitch-dark and often hilarious collection of stories set in the tiny Appalachian town of Knockemstiff, Ohio, a community so deprived and diminished it no longer appears on any map. The youth of Knockemstiff grow up in the malignant shadow of their parents; raised on abuse, alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, they are stunted in every possible way: emotionally, mentally, sometimes physically. They talk a lot about escape but they never so much as cross the county line. The stories in Knockemstiff are simple and compact, blunt and brutal, but are also infused with a deep sympathy for the incapacitating loneliness of poverty, neglect and severely limited horizons. Knockemstiff is a human, very funny and unforgettable debut from a stunning new voice in American fiction.

About the Author
After quitting school at seventeen, Donald Ray Pollock worked at Mead Paper Mill and as a truck driver in Chillicothe, Ohio. After thirty-two years employed as a labourer he enrolled at Ohio State University to study creative writing.
He is the author of two acclaimed books, the cult-classic short-story collection Knockemstiff, which went on to win the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship, and the novel The Devil All The Time.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. My father showed me how to hurt a man one August night at the Torch Drive-in when I was seven years old. And that opening sentence is from this superb novel, which is SIGNED on the title page. Not only is this RARE it is also deliberately 'shabby' and decidedly uncouth. The rough cut thick cover boards are bashed deliberately, and the titling and text on the front and back boards are aggressively slapped on in thick black ink.
