Mishke continued walking for four years, encountering many unspeakable horrors: at one point, she is forced to kill a German soldier to save her own life. Eventually, via the Ukraine, Romania and Italy, she found her way home to Belgium.

About the Author

Misha Defonseca was born to a Jewish family in Brussels in 1934; when she returned to Belgium at the end of the war after her epic journey, she met her future husband. After they were married, they emigrated to the United States; she now lives near Boston.
