William Gilkerson takes the broad, sweeping history of the human race and puts it into pictures that are at once meaningful, sometimes profound, and always funny. His pen takes us from cave men with rocks to modern bombs and rockets, and depicts the chaos throughout. First published in 1963, we are delighted to bring this amusing and glorious look at arms and armies through the ages to a new audience. There are laughs on every page, but also wry, thought-provoking observations, all expressed through Gilkerson's wonderfully detailed drawings which will enthral readers of all ages.

Award-winning author William Gilkerson is a sailor, painter, journalist, historian, and adventurer. In 2006 he received the Governor General's Literary Award for his novel Pirate's Passage in the Children's Literature (text) category. He is also the author of the novel Ultimate Voyage, as well as ten non-fiction books on nautical topics, and his paintings are internationally acknowledged to be among the finest contemporary maritime art. Gilkerson's drawings, watercolours, and oils have been featured in a dozen major institutional exhibitions and they have been anthologized and reproduced in scores of books, magazines, and on film. In 1963, Gilkerson On War: From Rocks to Rockets was published. As a boy Gilkerson used to draw little soldiers, an addiction that led to this tongue-in-cheek chronology of mankind's military majesty over the millenia. He lives with his family on the shores of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, where he sails his ancient cutter, Elly.
