He is the founder and editor of The Journal of Vaishnava Studies and an associate editor of Back to Godhead magazine of the Hare Krishna Movement. He is the author of over 20 books on Vaishnavism and related topics. including Black Lotus: The Spiritual Journey of Urban Mystic ( 2007), which is the story of Bhakti Tirtha Swami life . Steven J. Rosen has a strong opinion about vegetarianism and wrote Diet for Transcendence : Vegetarianism and the World Religions (1997 , published earlier as food for the spirit ) and Holy Cow: The contribution of Hare Krishna Vegetarianism and Animal Rights ( 2004) . In the previous volume , is explained in a systematic practice of vegetarianism in the various religious traditions such as Christianity , Islam , Buddhism , Hinduism and Judaism , with special attention to the philosophical schools of India. In the latter , citing the devotee and scholar Bhaktivinoda Thakura (1838-1914) and the Hindu sage Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (1927-2001) , look at the beginning of the Vedic tradition , animal sacrifices , and innovative contributions of Hare Krishna .
