Synopsis
This fascinating collection of around 250 old photographs shows in the finest detail some of the changes that have taken place in Ripley and Codnor over the last hundred years. Like many of the towns that grew up along the line of the coal seems that follow the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border, Ripley and Codnor have seen changes in fortunes this century that are a reflection of the changing demands for coal. Ripley was among the first of the towns to experience rapid industrial growth. These photographs show the industries, the streets and markets and some of the people who lived and worked here over the last century. These old scenes will bring back powerful memories for some and introduce newcomers and a younger generation to a world of family-run shops, trams and horse-drawn vehicles, coal-mining and even a town zoo!
