This book on the Petroleum Resources addresses the challenges of transforming hydrocarbons that exist in underground, to valuable products that can be sold and delivered. It is intended for readers who have a professional or student interest in the petroleum industry, and a basic level of prior knowledge in the technical and commercial aspects of the industry. The goal of the book is to increase the reader's general understanding of key work processes in the upstreamA" part of the petroleum industry; that is, the part of the industry that locates underground resources and converts them to valuable products. This book addresses many conditions currently facing the field of Petroleum Resources, including: * Much work in the petroleum industry is carried out in interdisciplinary project teams and work processes and involved personnel need to understand the wider context of petroleum resource development, and to share a terminology related to this. * Decision makers need to evaluate all aspects of the value chain to identify optimal field development solutions. * There is a need to recruit new graduates to the industry to work for oil companies and the engineering and service industry. Recruits to the industry will benefit from a general introduction to key topics related to developments of petroleum resources. * Scientists in different areas of the offshore oil and gas industry lack in many aspects the full understanding of the complexity of the industry.

Ove T. GUDMESTAD, University of Stavanger, Stavanger and Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway Dr. Ove T. Gudmestad holds a M.Sc. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Tromso (1973) and a Ph.D. in Hydrodynamics from the University of Bergen (1985). He spent two years as a student and visiting scientist at MIT. Dr. Gudmestad has over 20 years of engineering, research and project experience in the petroleum industry, including offshore-related and international experience. He has published books and a number of papers and has filed a number of patent applications. He has taught courses and offered seminars on Marine Technology, Environmental loads, Offshore pipelines, Offshore field development, Arctic offshore field development, Managing the development of an offshore field installation, and Deepwater technology Anatoly B. ZOLOTUKHIN, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Moscow, Russia, is the co-author of Introduction to petroleum reservoir engineering (Hoyskoleforl., 2000), as well as a number of papers in the field. Erik T. JARLSBY, Stavanger, Norway, is an advisor and lecturer on energy, economics and strategy.
There are large challenges facing the oil and gas industry, e.g. increasing challenges to find new oil and gas accumulations, a requirement for a clean environment and reductions in CO2 emissions being voiced by public and governments, requirement for long distance transport of natural gas from the producers to the consumers and rapid changes in the price of hydrocarbons on the world market. The decision makers need a wide background for their decisions, and all aspects of the value chain are important in order to identify the optimal field development solution. The objective of this book is to treat in a consistent manner the key aspects related to development of petroleum resources in order to allow an interdisciplinary view of the topics involved in development projects and in order to identify the most optimal development solution. The book is organized to allow the reader to review the different topics individually so the book can serve as a reference source for those interested in topics not familiar to themselves.
