Synopsis

A novel based on the award-winning play

In this follow-up novel to the iconic play, Tony Roper takes us on a deeper journey into the lives of Magrit, Dolly, Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers - the lifeblood of the Glasgow community. We also meet new characters from the women's lives and get to know more about their husbands, their families and the friends they rely on in troubled times.

These are the men and women from the shops, shipyards, bookies and street corners, whose wonderful sense of humour was honed by the grind of day-to-day living. By a skilful inter-weaving of the plot and characters, Tony Roper gives us a unique study of a humanity that can laugh at itself, take responsibility for its shortcomings and soon weeds out the chancers from the good guys. The Steamie is a novel that will make you laugh and cry.

"The gossip at the steamie is as endless as the piles of dirty washing."
THE SUNDAY POST

"The Steamie, a word-of-mouth hit that transcended its Glasgow origins to become a success from America to Latvia."
SUNDAY HERALD

"Like the stage show, the book is filled with unbeatable Glasgow humour, but it is peppered with beautiful observations of life and tinged with some deeply moving moments."
