How can it be that a book with only one word, repeated throughout, can be so good? The proof is in the pudding (well, the jungle actually) in Jez Alborough's superb Hug,a fantastic picture book that follows a baby monkey on the hunt for his mum and a cuddle.

As our little friend wanders through the jungle, enlisting the help of other jungle animals as they snuggle together with their young families. And all the time the story is told purely by the expression on the little monkey's face as his hopes are built and dashed again until eventually, with a huge smile, he finds his mum and reaps the reward.

Hug is a clever, entertaining and unusual book that portrays the art of illustration for children at its very best: characters are brought to life through facial expressions and body language, interacting with each other via the stroke of a brush, creating images that children will recognise and understand instantly.
