Synopsis

Many books giving advice on how to meditate are written by monks and mystics and as such do not appeal to the average westerner who has never meditated before. 'Inner Tranquility' is written from a far more worldly perspective and in it the author shares his own personal experiences, and frustrations, of learning to meditate as part of a 12 step recovery program. He explains the importance of sitting correctly to meditate in a way that is both humorous and yet very clear and factual, having discovered whilst learning to meditate how un-natural it is for westerners to sit still for more than a few minutes! There are simple tips scattered throughout the book to help anyone new to meditation, for example: "No matter how many times you get distracted during your meditation, RETURN to the practice. Everyone gets distracted all the time. It is the nature of the ego mind to get distracted. The practice of meditation involves realizing you have been distracted and then returning to the practice without judgement. It serves no purpose to beat yourself up for becoming distracted."
