This revealing personal history is a story of frustration but of ultimate success. The author takes us back through his early years in the South African Asian community when the colour bar was in force. Attending university to study medicine, he was confronted by appalling restrictions placed on the clinical training of non-white students at that time. It's easy to understand how his political consciousness was awakened. Obliged to complete his medical studies in the UK he stayed on and settled in Britain for good. Of course, he did not stop at practising medicine, he also became an active 'medical politician', joining the British Medical Association and assisting in the National Health Service administration. The message is clear: do not be discouraged by setbacks but pursue your aims with unswerving determination and you too can hold a fire in your hand.
