Synopsis

This book (together with Book 2) documents state-of-the-art research designed to complement the advances being made in the global water quality sector. Book 1 provides guidelines for implementing WSPs in developing countries. Book 2 provides further detail on supporting programmes. Evidence for these books is drawn from three years of research undertaken in Uganda and India funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British Government. The main focus is on the identification of hazard, vulnerabilities and risk of piped water supplies in urban areas of developing countries to microbiological contamination. The subject matter of Book 1 provides technical guidance and Book 2 provides information on the socio-economic, cultural, and institutional requirements for implementing Water Safety Plans in developing countries.
