Synopsis
The "Social Services Inspectorate" report, "A Jigsaw of Services" (March 2000) identified gaps in services to support disabled adults in their parenting role. In response to the findings of the SSI report, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation set up a national "Task Force on Supporting Disabled Adults in their Parenting Role". Key partners in the force include: Disabled Parents Network, the Department of Health and the Association of Directors of Social Services as well as representatives from the voluntary sector, leading academics and disabled parents. This report is based on the work of the task force and provides collective information on written policies, practice protocols and local services to support parents with learning difficulties, physical and/or sensory impairments. It identifies how many social services departments in England have explicit practice policies for providing services to disabled parents and analyses those in existence. The report also puts forward suggestions for improving policy and practice in this area.
