Synopsis
This epic tale follows the fortunes of Alice Openshaw, a feisty and intelligent Manchester girl, who is orphaned at twelve and forced to work as a servant girl in a class-ridden society. Her experiences fire her indomitable spirit in a story that takes Alice through both World Wars and sees her move from Manchester to Cardiff, then London. But it is the tranquil beauty of Cornwall and her home, Dos-y-Mor, that are central. Alice's personal history seems entwined with the dynamic and increasingly modern society she inhabits, but it is the timeless spirit of Cornwall that stands as a foil to this tide of change.
