Synopsis

Meticulously researched over three decades, this incredible - and extensively illustrated - collection of information is the first attempt to tell the complete story of Scotland in a single book since the great 19th century gazetteers of publishers like Chambers and A&C Black. Using a huge range of sources, Robin Smith has created a reference book packed with interest and surprises for the general reader, tracing the development of each community from earliest times to the present day - with particular emphasis on the great achievements of the industrial age and the economic forces which underpin any settlement. The Making of Scotland is sure to become one of the 'must-have' reference books for anyone with a real interest in Scotland.
