The new edition of Calvert Markham’s comprehensive guide to establishing, marketing and operating a successful consultancy practice.
This book demystifies the consultancy profession by providing a clear picture of the role of the consultant, what can and cannot be achieved and how that role can be effectively practised. The issues facing the sole practitioner or practice partner are dealt with realistically, supported by frank and revealing anecdotes from the writer’s long experience as a practising consultant.
Practical Management Consultancy provides many valuable insights into areas of perceived difficulty with special emphasis placed on the conduct of assignments, marketing and making presentations. In addition the book will prove a useful reference manual for more experienced practitioners, who will appreciate the concise expositions of best practice and advice on the areas of change management and the art of influencing clients.

It's good to know that this book remains as popular as it was when it was first published over 20 years ago.
My company, Elevation Learning, runs courses for consultants and this book reflects the contents of the most popular course we run; over the years we have trained thousands of consultants from hundreds of organisations around the world.
This course also is an integral part of training for the UK Institute of Business Consulting's Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials and we give out Practical Management Consultancy as the support reading for this qualification.
So this book provides an ideal foundation for those who are relatively new to consultancy or for those who are more experienced and want to polish up their delivery skills.
Calvert Markham has been a management consultant for more than 30 years. After working in two major consulting practices, he set up his own businesses - Elevation Learning to provide training in consulting skills, and GreySpace Consulting to advise organisations that are setting up consulting businesses.
Calvert was President of the UK Institute of Management Consultancy (now the Institute of Business Consulting) in 2004, and sits on the Executive Committee of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes. He is President of the Richmond Group of Management Consultants and is visiting professor in the practice of management consultancy at Cass Business School in City University.
