The Somerset Levels and Moors are steeped in history, tradition and character, and today's vista has been shaped by centuries of human effort to reclaim the land for agriculture, especially since the Middle Ages. Naturally, farming methods have evolved; several of today's growers still harvest their withies by hand, but many now coppice their crop by machine and grow taller varieties of willow. Withy, Rush and Reed - A Somerset Legacy includes over 200 evocative black-and-white images, most of them taken between 1997 and 2002. Featuring rush and willow workers as well as the planting and harvesting of reed on the Somerset Levels alongside dramatic landscape shots, this wonderful collection also captures the spirit of more contemporary artistic approaches to willow, as well as environmental activities such as straw-bale house building and the farming of miscanthus, an energy crop. Many of the individuals portrayed in this book belong to a diminishing group with a rare understanding of the natural environment of the Levels and Moors. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Dustwrapper, landscape 4to ( 9.75" x 10.5" ), pp.224. Illustrated. Signed " Best Wishes. Caroline Bagias 2004 " on front endpaper. A photographic study of the Somerset Levels featuring over 200 black and white photographic plates by author and professional photographer Caroline Bagias. Emphasis is on the traditional and more modern depictions of rush and reed planting, willow workers and evocative landscape shots. Dustwrapper has minor marginal sunning to front cover, slight edge wear in places with a small closed split to the cover top edge. The title page has been neatly removed by a previous owner otherwise binding and contents are sound and very clean. So overall a VG copy in dustwrapper but again, lacks title page. Heavy book weighing c1700g when parcelled, exceeding the postage quotation default weight of 1000g and thus incurring extra postage over the default for orders from overseas and those sent by 1st class post in the UK ( 2nd class unaffected ).
