This is the fifth volume in a series of books published in the United Kingdom that purports to present the "latest advances" in pathology and is intended for pathology residents and practicing pathologists. One of the editors (Kirkham) is a surgical pathologist at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton while the other (Lemoine) is a molecular pathologist with the Imperial College School of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital, London. The chapters were written by 14 British authors, 2 each from Austria and Japan, and 1 each from the United States and France. This volume follows the format of earlier volumes. A softbound version is also available that is just the right size to slip into a laboratory coat pocket for reading when the opportunity arises. Progress in Pathology consists of 11 chapters covering a broad array of topics. It represents a potpourri of timely topics without a conscious effort to tie them together in any particular fashion. The highly detailed chapters are well written by individuals knowledgeable in their respective fields. The integumentary system receives the lion's share of attention with 5 chapters being devoted to dermatopathology. Two chapters focus on gastric pathology, while the remaining chapters are divided among radiology, vascular pathology, anatomic pathology, quality assurance, and information theory. The subjects of the chapters range from the basic causes of disease to the spectrum of disease involving certain organs to the routine handling of a pathologist's duties. Underlying pathophysiology discussed include the effects of light on the skin, pathology of Barrett's esophagus, inherited skin disorders, and arterial disorders. Disease categories reviewed include cutaneous B-cell lymphomas and histiocytic skin disorders. Practical advice for the surgical pathologist is provided regarding the use of sentinel lymph nodes in treatment of melanoma, routine reporting of non-neoplastic gastric biopsies, and quality assurance.
